Case description
The heritage village of Stensjö in the couth of Sweden is a pastoral dream. Traditional, red wooden houses are surrounded by lush fields with loweing heards of cows, while the dirt road winds towards the lake.
Now run as a heritage site and cultural museum, Stensjö was also the setting for a number of kids films about Noisy Village and attracts large quantities of tourists from across the world.
A good public toilet to cater for all the visitors was a priority, but the client worried about preserving the unique cultural environment. Danfo's designers worked closely together with the Royal Academy to develop an installation that offered modern, comfortable facilities while still echoing the surroundings. The result was a sturdy grey building that mirrored several of the architectural features of the old village installation.
